RÉSUMÉ : Storage yards at containers terminals are used to temporarily store inbound and outbound containers. A combination of container demand increase and storage yard capacity scarcity create complex operational challenges for storage yard managers. We present an overview of the relevant literature on storage yard operations, highlight current industry trends and developments and introduce models and solution approaches for various operational problems. In more detail, we will focus on the problem of dispatching straddle carriers and the scheduling of storage and retrieval of containers for automated stacking cranes. We show that the problem of sequencing a single automated stacking crane operating in a block of containers can be considered to be a special case of the directed rural postman problem which can be reformulated as an asymmetric Steiner traveling salesman problem. We show that this problem can be efficiently solved to optimality. Secondly, we examine a yard with two cooperating automated stacking cranes working in a single block. We introduce a mathematical model, and heuristic approach to solve this problem. Thirdly, we study the dispatching problem of twin-load straddle carriers operating at a terminal with an indented berth.
